
Julie London (nee Peck; September 26 1926 - 18 October 20th, 2000) was an American actor and performer her career spans more than 40 years. A torch performer renowned for her powerful, sultry contralto vocals, London recorded over thirty albums of pop and jazz standards between 1955 between 1955 and 1969. The album she released as her debut "Cry Me a River" which she recorded and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. London was also nominated in 1974 for the Golden Globe Award for her character in the role of Dixie McCall, a nurse on Emergency! London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her first professional job was as an actress , while she was an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year acting career began in the film industry in 1944. It included roles in the lead female role in several westerns. She signed a recording agreement with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This marked the start of her professional music career. She released her final studio album in the year 1969, but achieved continuing success playing the female lead role of nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) She starred alongside her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband was the producer of the show.
